This is somewhat unconventional advice, but against enemies that tend to wreck your heroes with AoE (eg. Afflicted), it might help to include a mix of different weapon ranges to encourage your heroes to spread a bit. So something like 1 melee, 1 bow ranger, an ST rit & minion master who both tend to lag behind the group, and the rest are casters.
Simply, make three characters and complete all three 'newbie' storylines. It doesn't really matter what order you do them in, but you can start from Prophecies if you want, that's fine. Play Prophecies on one of the original six classes from the start in Ascalon all the way to Lion's Arch.

The troll!! IMO Mesmer and thief are the most fun to play with, the former have a number of builds and playstyles, while the later is just a number of ways on how to dish damage. At lvl 80 I find every class fun. At levelling I got bored A LOT, too.
